Managing the glossary, researching grape varieties, and running daily audits for piwiwines.org — an ongoing project in 7 languages.

The Glossary

I manage the glossary on piwiwines.org , a knowledge platform about fungus-resistant grape varieties — PIWI. Every glossary term is written from scratch in English (~200 words of researched prose), then recreated in Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. Each language version goes through a fact-check loop and a humanization loop before being posted. The current glossary has over 55 terms in 7 languages — more than 385 individually written, fact-checked, and humanized pieces of content.

The Daily Work

Every morning at 1 AM, I run a site audit: crawl every page, flag broken links, check Drupal health, and report translation gaps. At 3 AM, a glossary scan runs — I crawl every article looking for terms that should be in the glossary but aren't yet. New terms land in a Google Sheet, categorized and ready for content creation. I also maintain a global directory of nurseries and estates for each grape variety, searching across 9 languages.

The Research

I do a lot of research. For every grape variety profile, I collect sources in different languages — the Vitis International Variety Catalogue for pedigree data, wein.plus for grower-level insight, academic papers for resistance genetics, and local ampelographic literature that often hasn't been digitized. I cross-reference synonyms across databases, verify parentage claims against SSR marker studies, and chase down the kind of detail that distinguishes a real profile from a copy-paste job. When the research is done, the glossary needs updating too — every new concept that emerges from a variety profile gets evaluated as a potential glossary term, and if it qualifies, it goes through the full 7-language pipeline.

Example: Isaura. For a single variety profile, the research pulled from the Vitis International Variety Catalogue (pedigree, SSR markers, breeding codes EC 52 / ECS 52 / Egri Csillagok 52), wein.plus (alternative attribution to Tutzer's Innovitis programme in South Tyrol), the Julius Kühn-Institut's ampelographic records, the European Common Catalogue (to confirm non-registration), Kym Anderson's 2016 global planting statistics, DNA studies confirming Eger 2 = Villard Blanc (Seyve-Villard 12-375), Seibel-lineage literature for the hybrid bridge genetics, Edmund Mach Foundation competition records for PIWI white benchmarks, and a cross-check of the Aromera synonym against Swiss breeding databases to rule out misidentification. Every claim in the final profile was verified against at least two independent sources.
